Smart Objects are one of the most powerful and underused features in Photoshop. They allow you to work with layer content non-destructively, scale without quality loss, and embed linked assets that update automatically. This guide covers everything you need to know about Smart Objects in 2026.

What is a Smart Object?

A Smart Object is a container that wraps a layer or group of layers. The original content is preserved inside the container, so any transformations, filters, or adjustments you apply are non-destructive. You can always revert to the original content or modify the embedded data by double-clicking the Smart Object layer thumbnail.

Non-Destructive Scaling

The most common reason to use Smart Objects is to enable lossless scaling. Normal pixel layers degrade when scaled down and then back up. A Smart Object preserves the original resolution data inside the container, so you can scale it up or down as many times as you need without any loss in quality. This is essential for mockup work where you adjust the size of elements repeatedly.

Smart Filters

When you apply a filter to a Smart Object, Photoshop stores it as a Smart Filter rather than permanently altering the pixels. Smart Filters appear as a list below the layer and can be toggled on or off, re-ordered, adjusted, or deleted at any time. This turns every filter into an entirely reversible, non-destructive effect.

Linked Smart Objects

Linked Smart Objects reference an external file rather than embedding content directly. When you update the source file, all documents containing the linked Smart Object update automatically. This is ideal for logos, watermarks, or UI components used across multiple design files. Use File, Place Linked to add a linked Smart Object to your document.

Smart Object Mockups

The most popular use of Smart Objects in templates is for product mockups. A mockup file contains a Smart Object placeholder with a perspective transform or warp applied. You double-click the Smart Object, replace the content with your artwork, save, and close. The mockup automatically shows your artwork in the correct perspective. This is the core technique behind almost every PSD mockup template available today.

Converting Layers to Smart Objects

Right-click any layer or group in the Layers panel and select Convert to Smart Object. For a group, this embeds the entire group as a single Smart Object. You can also select multiple layers, right-click, and convert them together into one Smart Object that contains all the selected layers.
